June 2016 Feature Release

Schedule

Code deployment and site updates are scheduled beginning June 20, 2016.

Key Enhancements

Donation Forms

Donation forms have been updated on all Organization, Project, and peer-to-peer Fundraiser pages with the following enhancements:

New 'Pay the Processing Fee' Option Added

  • Since 2009, GiveMN has charged a processing fee on all donations made through GiveMN.org using credit and debit cards. This fee has been deducted from donations by default and a net amount, less fees, has been disbursed to organizations monthly. With this feature release, donors now have the option to pay the processing fee in addition to their donation, ensuring that 100% of their donation is disbursed to the organization.
  • After donors complete the donation form with their contact information and optional tribute or memorial dedication, they are asked if they would like to pay the processing fee associated with their contribution and can choose "Yes" to add the processing fee to their contribution or "No" to have the organization pay the processing fee. The "Yes" option is selected by default to encourage donors to pay the processing fee; donors may choose "No" if they wish. They can also follow a link to learn more about costs related to fundraising.
  • When donors choose to pay the processing fee, the fee is calculated for them and included in their donation summary before they enter payment information so the total to be charged to their credit or debit card is clear. If a donor wants to change any of the information they've entered in the donation form, including their processing fee choice, they can use the 'back' button found at the bottom of the donation form to go back and revise their information.
  • When donors receive their automatic email receipt (or retrieve a copy of their receipt from their optional GiveMN Donor Account), the total amount of their credit or debit card transaction, including an itemized list of charges including any processing fee paid, will be included in the receipt. The full amount charged to a donor's credit or debit card is tax-deductible, including any processing fee paid.
  • Data reflecting the processing fee choices made by donors is available in reports. See additional details below under Detailed Donation Reports.

'Add A Tip' Request Removed

  • Since 2010, the GiveMN.org donation form has asked donors to consider supporting GiveMN as well by adding a tip to their donations. That request has been removed from all donation forms.
  • GiveMN is grateful to the thousands of donors each year who added a tax-deductible tip to their donation. Tips made prior to this change will still be reflected in the optional GiveMN Donor Account as tax-deductible donations in Year-End Giving Reports.

New Default Donation Value Added

  • For donation forms that are not using customized Suggested Donation Amounts and Descriptions, the default donation values now include a $250.00 option to encourage donors to think about the impact that a larger donation can make.
  • The options for $10.00, $25.00, $50.00, and $100.00 remain in place. These default options can be replaced by page administrators using the Suggested Donation Amount tool found in the GiveMN Administrative Area.

New Recurring Donation Frequency Added

  • All donation forms now include an option for bi-weekly recurring donations to allow donors to set up automatically recurring donations to be processed 26 times per year, perhaps to align with their personal payroll schedule.
  • The options for weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual donations remain in place and are easy for donors to find in the Donation Frequency section of the donation form.
  • Donors can easily manage their recurring donations, including updating their billing and credit card information, through their optional GiveMN Donor Account. Creating an account is not required in order to make a recurring donation.
  • If a donor chooses a recurring donation option, their selected payment schedule is included in the Donation Details and the Disbursement Details reports available in the GiveMN Administrative Area as well as in the Donation Report available to peer-to-peer Fundraiser page owners.

'Tribute or Memorial Dedication' Moved

  • The optional field where donors may add a tribute or memorial dedication, or other note, along with their donation, is now easier to find. This field now appears just below the contact information fields.
  • If a donor chooses to add a dedication at the time of their donation, the message is included in the Donation Details and the Disbursement Details reports available in the GiveMN Administrative Area as well as in the Donation Report available to peer-to-peer Fundraiser page owners.

New On-Screen Donation Confirmation Added

  • After a donor submits their donation and it is successfully processed, a confirmation message will appear that thanks the donor for their gift and displays the exact email address that they entered for their donation. This will help donors remember where to look for their automatic email receipt and reminds donors that they can create an optional GiveMN Donor Account to easily access their donation receipts and manage recurring donations.

Automatic Email Receipts

Since 2009, GiveMN has provided automatic email receipts for donations made through GiveMN.org, delivered to donor email inboxes almost immediately following a gift. The following enhancements have been made to receipt emails:

New Sender Name Added

  • Receipts were previously delivered showing only the "help@givemn.org" email address as the sender. Automatic email receipts will now appear with "GiveMN Donation Receipt" as the sender name. This will make is more clear to donors what the email is about and will reduce the likelihood that the email receipt will be caught by spam filters.

New Shorter, Simpler Receipt Message

  • Automatic email receipt messages now start with a simple "Thank you!" and let donors know that their donation was processed successfully.
  • As with the enhanced on-screen donation confirmation, the automatic email receipt now reminds donors that they can create an optional GiveMN Donor Account to easily access their donation receipts and manage recurring donations.
  • Receipts continue to include the optional Thank You Message from the organization that page administrators can customize in the GiveMN Administrative Area.
  • Receipts continue to include detailed information about the donation, including the name of the organization to which the gift was directed and the amount of the transaction, along with the necessary gift substantiation language required for including tax-deductible donations in tax preparation.

Detailed Donation Reports

Organization administrators, as well as peer-to-peer Fundraiser page owners, can access detailed, downloadable donation reports at any time. The following updates have been made to reports:

New Data Added to Donation and Disbursement Reports

Donation Detail Reports for Organization Administrators

  • Organization administrators can access their detailed donation reports in the GiveMN Administrative Area.
  • With this release, the following data is added to this report:
    • Special Event Tag displays a code added by GiveMN to identify donations that are included in a special event powered by GiveMN. This column will be blank in most cases. If an organization wants to 'tag' donations with a special code of their own, the Org Reporting Code and Project Reporting Code tools are available in the GiveMN Administrative Area.
    • Processing Rate displays, in decimal form, the processing fee percentage applicable to each donation.
    • Donor Paid Fee shows whether a donor chose to pay the processing fee associated with their contribution ("Yes") or preferred to have the processing fee withheld from their contribution prior to disbursement ("No").
    • Total Fees Withheld from Donation shows the dollar amount that will be withheld from the Donation Amount based on the Processing Rate and whether or not the Donor Paid Fee. If the donor paid the processing fee, this amount is $0.00, ensuring that 100% of their contribution will be disbursed to the organization as displayed in the Net Amount Donated column.
  • The Dedication column was moved to the last column of the report. This allows all of the data in the Downloadable CSV document to remain in the desired columns. In cases where a donor uses special punctuation or characters in their dedication message that information can distort the appearance of data in subsequent columns of the report. This change reduces that distortion.

Disbursement Detail Reports for Organization Administrators

  • Organization administrators can access their detailed disbursement reports in the GiveMN Administrative Area.
    • Total Fees Withheld from Donation shows the dollar amount that was withheld from the Donation Amount based on the Processing Rate and whether or not the Donor Paid Fee. If the donor paid the processing fee, this amount is $0.00, ensuring that 100% of their contribution was disbursed to the organization as displayed in the Net Amount Disbursed column.
  • Columns for Disbursement TypeDisbursement Reference NumberDisbursement Date, and Estimated Delivery Date have been moved toward the end of the report, adjacent to the Net Amount Disbursed.

Donation Detail Reports for Peer-to-Peer Fundraiser Page Owners

  • Peer-to-peer Fundraiser page owners can access their detailed donation reports from the editing area of their Fundraiser page.
  • Several column labels were updated to match the labels found in Organization reports.
  • With this release, the following data is added to this report:
    • Confirmation Code displays the same unique code that is provided on the automatic email receipt delivered to donors. This makes it easier to locate specific donations if a donor has a question and references their Confirmation Code.
    • Referring Page URL shows the web address where a donor was browsing just before they landed on the page where the donation form was located and they completed their gift. This helps page owners understand the paths donors are using to find their donation pages.
    • Recurring Type shows whether a donor chose to make a recurring donation ("Ongoing") or a one-time donation (blank).
    • Recurring Period shows the frequency of a recurring gift as weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annually.
  • The following unnecessary columns have been removed from this report:
    • Org Reporting Code
    • Project Name
    • Project Reporting Code
    • Fundraiser Name

GiveMN Donor Accounts

GiveMN provides optional donor accounts that allow easy access to a "My Giving" giving history, displaying all donations made through GiveMN.org since 2009 with easy "Give Again" buttons and options to "Modify" recurring donations. Donors can also manage their peer-to-peer Fundraiser and Team pages and access Year-End Giving Reports that summarize all of their donations for a calendar year. The following enhancements have been made to optional GiveMN Donor Accounts:

'Pay the Processing Fee' Choice Added to Reports

  • Transactions completed through GiveMN.org are 100% tax-deductible. This includes donations to organizations as well as all processing fees. If a donor chooses to pay the processing fee associated with their contribution, the full amount that is charged to their credit or debit card is tax-deductible and reflected in their Year-End Giving Report to make tax preparation easier.

Fixes & Changes

Missing Recurring Donation Option

  • Some donation forms were missing the 'weekly' recurring donation option. This is fixed and all GiveMN.org donation forms now include options for weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual recurring donations.

Missing Repeat Donation Option

  • Some donation forms did not have a 'donate again' button below the on-screen confirmation message displayed after a successful donation. All GiveMN.org donation forms now include an option for donors to make another donation right away with most of their information already completed for them.
  • For donors who wish to easily repeat their donations at a later time, they can log in to their optional GiveMN Donor Account and choose "Give Again" from their list of past donations. If repeating a donation automatically is desired, donors may set up weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly, or annual recurring donations through any GiveMN.org donation form.

Donation Detail Report for Project Pages Removed

  • Detailed information for donations made to Project pages is available in the Donation Details Report and Disbursement Details Report for an organization in the GiveMN Administrative Area. The unique report located on individual Project pages has been removed.
  • This feature was rarely used by organization administrators and required significant technical resources to maintain along with other available reports.
  • If an organization is using Project pages and wants to find donation and disbursement data for a specific page, the Project Name column is available in the Donation Details and Disbursement Details reports for the Organization page.

Peer-to-Peer Fundraiser Page Thermometer Fixed

  • The error related to the Fundraising Thermometer on peer-to-peer Fundraiser Pages, causing donations made before 12 noon on the Start Date of the thermometer to be excluded from the progress amount, is fixed.

Known Issues

The following issues related to the key enhancements, changes, and fixes included in the June 2016 Feature Release are known to the GiveMN technology team and will be addressed in future releases.

'Pay the Processing Fee' Option for Recurring Donations

  • With this feature release, donors how have the option to pay the processing fee in addition to their donation, ensuring that 100% of their donation is disbursed to the organization.
    • Known Issue: Currently, only the first transaction of a recurring donation is impacted by a donor's choice of "Yes" to 'pay the processing fee.' All recurring transactions will be assessed the processing fee as though the donor had chosen "No."
    • Future Development: The GiveMN technology team is working to improve this feature so that the option selected by the donor at the time of their first donation is maintained for each recurrence of that donation.

'Pay the Processing Fee' Amount Reflected in Fundraising Thermometer

  • With this feature release, donors how have the option to pay the processing fee in addition to their donation, ensuring that 100% of their donation is disbursed to the organization.
    • Known Issue: Currently, the additional amount transacted by a donor to 'pay the processing fee' is added to the total fundraising represented in the Fundraising Thermometer on Organization, Project, peer-to-peer Fundraiser, and Team pages, inaccurately reflecting the amount raised by a particular cause.
    • Future Development: The GiveMN technology team is working to improve this feature so that the processing fee amount paid by donors at the time of their donations is not reflected in the Fundraising Thermometer.

Future Releases

Additional enhancements, fixes, and changes are in development for release in Fall 2016 in preparation for Give to the Max Day. Watch the GiveMN Help Team's Platform Release Notes area for details.
